Helping Children and Teens Manage Anxiety: Exposure Therapy, CBT, and Holistic Treatment Options

Anxiety in children and adolescents is increasingly common, but the good news is that effective treatment options are available. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I’ve worked with many young people struggling with anxiety—whether it’s social anxiety, separation anxiety, or generalized anxiety. The key to success is taking a comprehensive approach that addresses both the emotional and physical symptoms of anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A Proven Approach

​

CBT is the gold standard in treating anxiety, helping children and teens understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. They learn to identify and reframe negative thinking patterns, which allows them to manage anxiety and feel more in control of their emotions.

Through CBT, young people also develop practical coping skills such as deep breathing, mindfulness, and progressive muscle relaxation. These tools help them manage anxiety in real time, empowering them to take control of their symptoms and face anxiety head-on.

Exposure Therapy: Facing Fears Instead of Avoiding Them

​

One of the most effective strategies in treating anxiety is exposure therapy, a core component of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It’s common for children and teens to avoid anxiety-provoking situations, which provides temporary relief but ultimately reinforces their fears.

Exposure therapy gradually introduces these situations in a controlled, safe way, helping children learn they can tolerate their anxiety and face their fears. Over time, this reduces their overall anxiety and builds their confidence. For example, a child with social anxiety might start by discussing social situations, move to role-playing, and eventually work toward attending a small social gathering.​

Medications: Part of a Broader Treatment Plan

​

While therapy is the cornerstone of anxiety treatment, in some cases, medication may be necessary to manage severe symptoms. It’s important to understand that medication is not a standalone solution. It works best when combined with therapy, particularly CBT, and other lifestyle supports.

In my practice, I take a conservative approach to medication, considering each child’s unique needs and starting with the lowest effective dose. I always emphasize that medication is just one piece of the puzzle—it can help ease symptoms so that children and teens can engage more fully in therapy and daily life.

Supplements for Anxiety: A Natural Boost

​

In addition to therapy and medication, some families choose to explore natural supplements to help manage anxiety. While supplements aren’t a cure, certain ones can provide additional support in reducing anxiety symptoms.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, have been shown to help reduce anxiety in some children.

  • Magnesium supports relaxation and sleep, which can be beneficial for those with anxiety.

  • L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea leaves, is known for promoting relaxation.

  • Lavender is another supplement worth considering. Research shows that lavender oil can have calming effects, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Lavender supplements or essential oils (when used safely) can be a gentle way to support mental health. It can be used as a supplement in capsule form or diffused as an essential oil to promote calmness.

 

It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplements, as they are not regulated like prescription medications, and there can be interactions with other treatments or underlying health conditions.

A Holistic Approach to Treating Anxiety

I believe that the most effective way to treat anxiety in children and teens is through a holistic approach. This means combining exposure therapy and CBT with other supportive tools such as medication (if necessary), natural supplements like lavender, and lifestyle changes. Family involvement also plays a crucial role in ensuring that children feel supported on their journey to wellness.

By addressing anxiety from multiple angles, we can help children and teens build the skills they need to not only manage their anxiety but also thrive in the face of it. With the right support, they can develop the resilience and confidence to navigate life's challenges.
